BLS Career Outlook Information The field of Software Engineering as a whole is very broad, with jobs ranging from management to the nitty-gritty programming. As for my interests, I’ve chosen to have a career as a Software Developer. Although very similar to Computer Programming, Software Developers are in charge of planning the beginning to outcome of a program. Both careers typically work side-by-side, where the developer creates the goals and flow-charts for how a program will function, and the programmer creates the program. Other times, a developer might also program code, which is why they are expected to have an advanced understand of code. The educational requirement for a Software Developer is at minimum a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a similar major; however, some companies may ask for a master’s degree. Majoring in Computer Science is oftentimes the most convenient, because it broadens your options for future careers; though, elective classes have to be related to programming, as companies expect you to have knowledge of programming and the fundamentals. The median salary for students 10 years after attending CalPoly is $63,100, while the median for Fresno State is $43,300. Comparing both of these prices to the reported prices by BLS of $102,280 for Software Developers, these colleges have considerably lower salaries. Concluding that there is no benefit would be wrong, since median wages don’t consider what careers people have chosen. Computer programming, although similar to Software developing, only earns and annual wage at roughly $60,000.
