Personal Essay: Pursuing A Career In College

Ever since I was younger, I knew that I wanted a successful future. I remember when I was nine, I would go online and look at colleges. As I got older, the colleges I wanted to attend constantly changed. This was due to the fact that I was not yet sure what I wanted to be. When I was younger I wanted to have a career in art. Hence I wanted to go to the Art Institute of New York. As I got older, my wants changed until I finally realized what I wanted to have a career in. Now that I no longer want to have a career in art, I would like to have a career in sports. I’ve decided that when I am older I want to be a professional basketball player in the WNBA. However my dream is to be the first female to play in the NBA. After I made this decision, I thought about what I needed to do to accomplish my career goal, and work to make my dream come true. I researched colleges to find out which ones had skillful basketball teams and would help take me to the WNBA. When I was in the eighth grade, I looked at high schools outside of Yonkers. The first school that I fell in love with was Scarsdale High School. I fell in love with the broad selection of sports, the beautiful school itself, and the core curriculum. However you obviously have to live in Scarsdale to go there, and I couldn’t just ask my Mother to uproot our entire lives for me to go to school there. After that, I started looking at schools in the city. It wasn’t until my godmother told me about the Harvey School that I finally had hope. I thought that even if I did get accepted I wouldn’t stand a chance paying for tuition and other fees. After she also told me that they offered financial aid and that my god brother received a full scholarship for basketball, I really believed I had a chance.
