As a member of law enforcement, my interaction with correction is closer than most people. However, it is not as familiar as correctional officer since I work in the traffic division. My closest contact with someone who was in correction facility is my mechanic. I have known him for 2 years through an introduction from a close friend. I first met him in the parking lot of his apartment complex where he works on car. I was cautious of his abilities to work on my car in the parking lot. I did not see any heavy equipment where you see in a mechanic shop, the only identification to that someone work on cars was the presence of an industrial size jack stand. The tools were all brand name, clean, and organize in their drawers. I do not want to be cliché, but the phrase ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover” apply in this case. I was expecting the vast amount of tools he had to make the any difficult jobs seem easy. As we work on the vehicle, I had a little discussion with him. I came to learn he was in a correction facility for three years for auto theft. He told he had great job as an airplane mechanic prior to being arrest and was on track to become a supervisor in a few years. His life came to a halt and have been on the waning due to being in prison. He found it was hard to find a job after his release. I mean he was a very capable mechanic much better than some of my previous mechanics. It was disheartening and depress for him being unable to obtain a job in which he was qualify for but denied due to his criminal record. I did not realized how much a criminal record can affect a person life afterward first hand. The job outlook for someone with a record is very limited to labor work. If given opportunities he would probably be a supervisor or manager position with his skill
