Like anyone in high school, especially coming from Kenwood’s academic center, I have had my share of struggles and roadblocks in every
It would be remiss of me to try and write about the adversities I have faced as a high school student attending Blythewood High School, without first reflecting on the many blessings I have been awarded. I attend a wonderful school with some of the best teachers in South Carolina who provide quality education and the tools that I must use to succeed in any field of life. I was also fortunate enough to grow up in a nuclear household with two educated parents who were able to help me with anything that I lacked in, whether that may be hiring a tutor for me or sitting at the kitchen table late at night to help me finish my homework. The adversities that I have faced are miniscule in comparison to some of the students that I sit right next to in class, but I have had my share of difficulties too. I remember starting my freshman year at Blythewood High School thinking about all the changes that I would have to face, transitioning from Kelly Mill Middle School to this large campus in this little town of Blythewood.
A time when I was faced with a significant challenge, but learned to overcome it was sophomore and junior year in history. History has always seem to be the class I tend to struggle in, no matter who I sit next to or how many notes I take. Sophomore as time when on to second semester I realized I wasn’t doing well; I was procrastinating with homework, not doing well on test, and stated to pay less attention in class. I got a D for the first semester and when I saw that on my report card I knew I had to change something. I realized history need to become a much higher priority.
What is your life story? What impact do your success and failure narratives have on your decision making and behaviors? Do you understand why you behave as you do?
When times get tough and adversity is thrown at you like a curveball all you can do is stay positive and know to never give up. Unfortunately I have had to deal with a couple scenarios where I have been faced with adversity. I have had to overcome my parents being divorced, and a family member who has overcame a drug addiction. That was one of the hardest things I was ever faced with going through middle school, but knowing that there will always be a tomorrow and to not give up on someone has had a positive impact in the end. It has brought my family closer than we have ever been.
I had to find opportunities instead of them coming to me because of amount of resources my parents had. The greatest challenge in my life was to get good grades because that was the one thing no one could take from me. The discouraging part was that at school I was just a number and no one could see the knowledge I
From 2014 until now I have witnessed several of my younger siblings graduate before me. The bittersweet moment of seeing someone younger than you doing better, is a strong moment. You can either let it demotivate you or you overcome it . John Wooden once said,”Failure isn't fatal, but failure to change might be". I declared myself as a failure in 2014 because I was suppose to graduate from a traditional high school.
During high school, the biggest obstacle I faced was the extent of the classes and resources offered to me, or lack thereof. Growing up in a rural town with a small high school meant I missed out on many opportunities students in urban areas were offered. For example, I did not have the option to take classes to prepare for going to University, or training involving my major interest of political science. There were no Advanced Placement (AP) or Honors courses offered in some of the common subjects like World History or Civics/Economics. While I was disappointed that I did not get important opportunities like AP, I understood that this was a trade off of living in a small, supportive community, and I accepted this fact.
One challenge that i have faced and that impacted me in a drastically manner was my cousins death. Many people overcome a death in a few weeks, but it took me a while to face the fact that I was no longer going to see him. His death really effected me because he was the only one who supported my dreams in going to the army . I guess it was because he was in the army at that time. I would always get put down because my dreams where not for a girl
The most significant challenge I faced in my life was during my sophomore year of high school during which the music director had quit. This caused the band to have no one to direct it or teach us. This caused the bulk of the effort to be pushed to the few instructors we had and to us the students. This challenge had been present throughout the summer, the marching season, and the concert season.
At first, it took me a while to accept my responsibilities and get over my fear of failing and getting nowhere. Now that I am within the “unknown” there are many challenges that I face every day and will continue to face. There is the challenge of finding out what I want to study in college, doing well on standardized tests, and getting good grades in all of my classes. There are also temptations I have to face such as choosing whether to hang out with friends or do the homework that is due the next day. But I am able to overcome most of these challenges and temptations with the help of my parents, teachers, and friends who help push me to be the best I can be every day.
However, I conquered that challenge and became an A honor roll student since then. I came across other obstacles in life as well. All my life I was always ahead of my class and would take higher grade classes such as in math and reading. Once I got to high school, it became more of a challenge to
At this time of year, I begin to look back at my life after 12 hard years of schooling. Throughout the course of my life, there have been many ups and downs, but these up and downs is what made me who I am today. These influences have shaped my values, attitudes and beliefs towards life. There have been many important people and events that has impacted my life. One of which is family and the media.
Obstacles in life is just like the game of Jenga. You take out a piece successfully and put it on top. But never forget that as we finish each turn, it only gets harder and harder to accomplish. One wrong move and it would cost you everything that you haveworked so hard achieve for. People like who I was, so focused and determined on succeeding, forgetting the fact that success also comes with failure.
In our life, there are periods of challenges that we must face, but the real challenge is how we grow and learn from overcoming them. Being naive children, we believed that life was simplistic and effortless. Well, we were wrong, we can only yearn for life to be easy. Growing up, we continue to face countless hurdles that only get bigger and bigger. My life, in particular, has been filled with numerous up and downs.
