Personal Narrative: An Interview With A Teacher

The person that I interviewed was Liz Wimp. She is a first grade teacher currently in employed at Vienna-Finley Elementary School. Liz has been a teacher for ten years and has taught kindergarten, first, and second grade. Liz’s favorite subjects to teach are reading and Social Studies. Along with her teaching, Liz is also a sponsor for the K-2 Lego League and a member of the Climate Committee. When I asked Liz what made her want to become a teacher she stated that she chose to become a teacher so that she could come back to where she was raised and make a positive impact on her community. Liz also stated that she was actually able to come back and teach at the elementary school that started her love for teaching. While Liz has had many interesting experiences as a teacher, she said that her most interesting, so far, was having her son in her class. She told me about how it took both her and her son a while to adjust to go from being mother and son to student and teacher. Going along with her favorite part comes her least favorite. Liz told me that her least favorite part of teaching was having to switch to merit pay. Since I was no sure what she meant by this Liz explained that her pay is based off the test scores that her students get. Liz also stated that this type of pay makes her job more stressful than it already is. Another thing that was brought up in our interview was the fact that her school does not have many professional development days. Since her school does not have many professional development days, Liz gave me some information about how she connects with other teachers to swap ideas to help improve each other’s
