Throughout high school, I have been involved in a great number of activities. These include athletics, clubs, and taking part in community service. I have played varsity field hockey my freshman, sophomore, and senior year of high school. I also played varsity lacrosse my freshman and sophomore year. The sport that I am most well known for is swimming, which I have participated in for all four years of high school.
It felt as if i was just coasting along. That year, I earned the team MVP position and all state, all league, and all conference titles. Teams knew that when they had to play our team, they had to try and shoot through a wall. I have witnessed coaches talked strategy on trying to get into my head, get the ball around me, and even try and take me physically out of the game. I was fully dedicating myself and time to the sport, breathing, eating, sleeping waterpolo.
I have participated in volleyball, basketball, track, and cheerleading. These activities have taught me teamwork, which will play an important role in the real world.
Many students find that a difficult course load and after school activities are difficult to balance. However, student athletes perform the amazing task of combining the two. This feat involves staying up late to finish assignments after already completing a hard workout. I believe that I should receive the David Logan Scholarship because I am a competitor in the classroom and on the field.
Participating in sports highlights my ability to work with teammates and focus in difficult situations. I have been captain on my volleyball team since seventh grade and captain on my club volleyball team for the last two years. Each year
Sean Hampton said “Victory is the child of preparation and determination.” My first year of attending Thomson Middle School I was determined to play, no matter how much I had to work I was determined. The coaches had a meeting were they informed us on a few rules. One was that you had to be in the seventh and eighth grade to participate. A pile of disappointment tumbled into the bottom of my stomach because I was only in the sixth grade.
Sports have been apart of my life for many years. I have been actively involved in volleyball and softball throughout my lifetime. I started playing these sports at a young age and fell in love with the sports and have been playing them ever since. I love to play volleyball, but softball is my passion. As a three year letterwinner and playing the shortstop position, I have faced many challenges.
I became a CYO athlete when I was seven years old. The reason I joined track was because I was the fastest runner at my school and I wanted to join something at which I could excel. When I attended the first track meet with teams from across the diocese, it quickly became clear that I did not know anything about track meets and that I was not a fast runner. The competition was stiff and I realized that I was not the superstar that I had imagined myself to be.
I remember back when I was a five-year old and all the ambitions I had to become an outstanding woman when I grew up. I remember looking up to my older cousins who were in college and knowing that I would be in their shoes one day. Hearing them talk about all the activities they were involved in and just looking for those opportunities for me. I knew that I would be successful in any area that I applied myself in, and that one day my younger cousins would look up to me as a role model. My five-year old self would see me today as a successful young lady who has worked for what I have and is ready to excel in my future.
I have never been shoved into a locker before and no bully has ever stolen my lunch money, but I am a nerd. I have never scored the winning goal or won the championship game, but I am an athlete. I am not the greatest painter and I do not spend much time in the dark room at my school, but I am an artist all the same. Living in a society that is so obsessed with labeling people, it is very tempting to want to follow suit, trying to fit into any one of these often very specific and restricting categories. Before beginning my high school career, I remember thinking to myself, Who am I going to be in high school?
Knowing my capability to reach a goal, drives me to change. I had announced at work one day I was going to start weight watchers. A coworker scoffed and said, you will never do it. His lack of faith, motivated a 30 pound weight loss. I decided to make the change and then acted on it.
In seventh grade, my buddies and I considered trying out for the golf team and imagined it would be an exciting task to venture. The previous summer, I had gone to the golf course and practiced a generous amount of time on my game and I believed I would be skilled enough to make the team. Also, I had friends that were on the team the previous year and that gave me an extra incentive to try out. In seventh-grade, after trying out for the golf team, I made it. Making the team sparked the greatest passion for a game I have ever had, and it has become my life rather than a hobby.
Unfortionally at the age of four I lost my mother and my father had to take care of three children by himself. My dad was a great parent who did not have lots of time to dedicate to his children when he was always working. For that reason at an early age I did not have anybody who encourage me to read. When I started school I always struggled in reading because my first language was Spanish and it was hard for me to start to learn a new language at six years of age. I was always in an ELD class for people who had a hard time with reading and writing.
Generations Past Generations come, and generations go. When each generation passes, with them goes lessons learned, memories of “good old days,” and advice that is most often right. The previous generations are full of useful information that they have picked up by experience. I always enjoyed listening to the stories of these experiences from family and friends. It was a beautiful fall day, with a crisp breeze floating across the land.
Regretfully, football always came first and school came second. Unfortunately, I always seemed to limit myself when it came to my future endeavors following high school, but never when it came to playing football. Therefore, I put all my efforts into getting a district-wide award and for my team to earn a spot in the state playoffs. Football is
