In March of 1993, there was a NASCAR race in Atlanta in which my dad and four of his friends decided to take a road trip to. The weather predicted for the race was supposed to be cold and rainy. My dad was the kind of person to prepare for anything, so he took gear for rain and cold weather. My dad, pulling a pop up camper behind his Chevy Silverado, met his four friends in Chattanooga. They finally got to Atlanta, where they set up in the middle green of the raceway.
Dirt Bike Catastrophe Some four years ago on a small loop road, county road 355, hidden somewhere in the weeds was a convolution maze of dirt bike trails. It couldn’t have been but six months since my step brother, Austin and I started riding dirt bikes daily. We were nothing short of motocross eligible teenagers, jumping feet off the ground, sliding every turn, and being so dirty at the end of the day that two showers were necessary. All of these things changed very suddenly in a wreck that changed our lives.
True stories abound of good old boys transporting loads of illegal moonshine in their souped up 34 Fords, trying to elude the revenue agents as they drove without headlights along dark twisting dirt roads at speeds exceeding 120 miles per hour. The need to prove who had the fastest car led to weekend races at tracks carved out of pastures and corn fields. Bill France saw the need for formally organized competition and his efforts led to the founding in 1948 of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR), motorsport’s preeminent stock car racing organization.
Today being the last full day of the event brought us a good crowd and we managed to gain strong support. We had positive responses from folks around the nation on issues we are trying to fix from other states that have seen the effects of shutting down mines and power plants. Everyone is looking forward to being part of the upcoming call to action. The amount of people was consistent throughout most of the day.
Life’s as usual in my life until a date appeared on the calendar. March 9th: Track Team Tryouts. I thought about trying out for the team; and after a silent debate in my head featuring the pros and cons of being on the team, I decided to I’d run again this year. Although I knew I was capable of making the team , I also knew I had to get back in shape. “Let’s turn theses flabs into abdominis then.”
BOOM! Thunder and rain shattered my eardrums as we passed the 20th McDonalds that day. The rain was coming down so hard that we could hardly see the road. This vacation will be one to remember. Every year, we go to Missouri to visit my mother’s family.
I would continue running track because I love the sport and the ways it pushes me to my physical and mental limits. With this sport, it has taught me discipline and dedication inside and outside the sport. I know no matter how fast I run or how hard I work, I can always do better. This sport has challenged me to do my best and beyond. When I would want to quit or stop running during a workout, I pushed through and endured.
My passion for track and field began with a Nike advertisement. At age ten, I opened the newspaper to a two-page spread of the hometown distance running legend Steve Prefontaine overlaid by a paragraph of inspirational copy. It concluded asking, “Where is the Next Pre?” The story of his small town Oregon roots, gutsy racing style, and ambition to be the best resonated with me like nothing ever had before. I told myself I was the next Pre, and then tore off for my first run through the streets of Eugene, Oregon – “Tracktown USA”.
All things in life can be enjoyable but also unexpected. Everyone has their own natural high. My natural high is riding my dirt bike. Even though riding my dirt bike is fun, it can also be very dangerous. It is very important to always wear safety gear while operating an off-road vehicle.
Track Meets “Alright, that's it for tonight,” said coach Sanchez, giving everyone a smile as Dakota went and ran again. Dakota was the last person off the track because he is the fastest runner on his track team, so he had special training to do. This took up a lot of his time. He was your average boy, but with a fast average running speed, and low grades.

I was finally stepping outside my comfort zone learning to ride a bike. The most memorable time in my life was the time my dad taught me how to ride my first bike. At the age of six he taught me the basics of riding a bike. Along with rules that were set in order to help me be responsible with my bike. I learned to ride a bike without training wheels.
Not because I am not fearless, or maybe I should say," not just because I am not fearless," but because I crave variety in my work day. Just the thought of doing the same thing day in and day out drives me mad. If you are considering breaking into stock car racing be prepared for a life of monotony. The first trait that you need in order to become a successful stock car racer is: Trait Number 1 - A craving for routine Stock car racers drive around and around in a circle over and over again, every day.
