Personal Narrative: Friday Night Football

The funny thing about promises is that they tend to ignore our handicaps. It had been years since I went to a Friday night football game. Normally I avoid such events due to my sensitive hearing. But on that particular night I promised someone very important to me that I would be there to support her.
Sarah, my girlfriend of three months, is the captain of Lone Oak high school's Color Guard. I remember when summer was coming to a close and she began learning drills and creating routines to teach to the other members. I was somewhat fascinated by the process as it was something I never really thought about before. While I was questioning her on the matter she slipped in the phrase "You should come watch me sometime." We agreed that I would come to their first home game.

Alone, yet not by myself, I sat in the stands listening to hundreds of cheers and chants ebb away into the endless expanse of sky. Unable to get an idea of the layout of the area, I felt very small. I could hear Sarah's voice but I was unable to locate her. Every now and then I felt a gentle breeze on my fingertips. I could hear the movement of the air through the openings in the stands. When the bands weren't beating on their drums I could hear chatter from the sidelines above the monochrome hectic clamor of the onlookers in the stands.
Twenty minutes after my arrival, Sarah's friend Jennifer came and sat with me. After that I didn't feel as worried. I stuck with Jennifer until the halftime performance ended. During the third quarter Sarah and I got food from the concession stand. During the fourth quarter I was allowed to sit with the band. By then I wasn't worried at all.
