The only immediate information I received was that my loving grandmother had been sent to the emergency hospital. I stood up rapidly, reacting horribly to the news, worrying of her health, wondering what the blood clot in her brain would do to her condition. I stood in disbelief for a few moments. Clutching my one connection to her, I prayed she would be well. A present, that would forever be cherished, was squeezed tightly in the arms of a frightened 7 year old child. The gift wasn’t patterned or vibrant. It wasn’t fancy or embellished, but it was filled with love, and it changed my life. A small, dull, brown stuffed bear grasped my heart, and has given me a lasting memory of the grandma that gave it to me, the one before her surgery, as she would never have the same personality as previously. After the surgery that removed the blood clot in her brain, I was led to my first visit to the hospital, and of course I was still clutching the bear. While this was a change from before, the new version of my grandmother grew on me, and I began to adjust. I ended up visiting my grandmother almost daily. Each day I would watch her adjust to her new life through physical therapy, strolls around the halls, and even being able to watch one of her favorite documentaries about her homeland, Israel. Some strong traits stayed with her like her love for people, her generosity, her sense of humor, and her clever mind stayed intact.
