1) Define psychology and trace its historical development. Psychology is the scientific research of the study of the human and animal behavior and mentalities. So in general the study is about how, what and why the human brain functions the way they do. As well as why mental illnesses exist.
In my 5 years with the company I was cross-trained in multiple positions to fit the company’s needs. As a Veterinary Technician, I showcased my veterinary skillset daily such as diagnostic work for hospitalization, anesthesia monitoring, and administrating medication. As a Receptionist & Client Services Associate, I performed administrative office duties such as inputting information of health records and billing into the company database all in a fast paced environment.
Senior year is winding down and three things that has been on my mind lately, one of which is UChicago. As I am artsy fartsy and I have written a crap poem to showcase my love for UChicago. As a junior, I am currently enrolled in Pre-AP Pre-Calculus for my math course. For my science course junior year, I am enrolled in Pre-AP Biology. I plan on taking AP Calculus and AP Biology my senior year of high school. I am interested in furthering my education because of my deep fascination in biology and how it affects our future. Ever since the first science class I took in 7th grade I knew that the topic would be incorporated in my post-secondary education in some fashion. Having the ability to understand the inner workings of nature and the relationships between molecules, organisms, and the environment have always interested me. I am a senior who is at the top of my class in AP Biology as of now, and the dream of being involved with the subject is beginning to come true. I have been accepted to a university who is #2 in the nation for my major--zoology--and I also have some experience in this field already from a handful of anatomical dissections, macroinvertebrate
When I started high school, the club that excited me the most, was National Honors Society. So, at the first chance I got, in my sophomore year. After being a member for a year, I quickly realized that I wanted to take on a leadership opportunity in the club. So, I took a shot for the stars, and campaigned for being president of Honors Society. Though I had some competition, I put my all into composing a speech, and I won the presidency, and I have been president since.
In my freshman year, I made a choice to relinquish some of my social life and replace that time giving back to my community. I joined a non-profit organization called the Volunteer Corp. We spent our time at food banks, park clean-ups, and even hosting local events. This experience left a lasting impression on me in many ways; however, one experience changed my perspective on life and serve as a constant reminder of how the smallest contribution to others can be the most powerful. St. Joseph University, in Philadelphia, held an event called Hand in Hand. It was an event dedicated to raising awareness for people with physical and/or developmental disabilities.
For my Diverse Field Experience this semester, I spent fifteen hours at the Mclean County Juvenile Detention Center. This particular center was occupied by about 8-14 juveniles at a time, all depending on court dates and occupancy of other nearby detention centers. This center usually had 3 staff members working the shift every time I went, which was seven to nine on weekday afternoons. I was intrigued to go to at this time because I thought it would be the time of the day were the juveniles had no school work or other obligations to do while I was there. I wanted to see what they liked to do in the free time before bed, the only stipulation being mandatory snack time at eight pm.
Next year at Embry-Riddle I plan start studying Cyber Intelligence and Security. Ever since middle school I knew I had a developing interest in the field of computer science and spent most of my time building the skills to excel in my classes. One of the first projects I got to use the computer on was a video for the Oregon Trail. I decided that it would be best to design an advertisement to showcase the facts in a new and creative way. When my group turned the project in, and it was shown to the class my teacher rewrote the assignment according to what we did and used it as an example of great work when recruiting new people.
My body cried like a newborn babe, afraid in an unfamiliar place. Immediately, my fresh eyes were greeted by waves of black hair, friendly smiles, and the Japanese language. I had arrived in Japan. I did not know the language or the customs, but I dove right into the dark pool. I was determined not to let the unknown drown me.
I braced against my opponent on the field-- calves burning, sweat soaking through my hair. Anxiety overcame me. We were tied with twenty seconds left on clock, and the opponent was sprinting beside me with the ball. As we both charged towards the goal, I tried my best to knock the ball out of his mesh. Yet, my attempts proved to be fruitless.
When I was young, I was always spending time with my family members. I was always playing in dirt like I lived in it or getting into stuff I shouldn’t have. One time I got into a bunch of white paint that got everywhere, but I was still a perfect angel. Also I was into hunting and fishing. The time that I caught my first big fish is one of my favorite memories of all time.
Ever since I can remember my mom has always told me “you are going to work with kids”. even when i was a kid myself. Up until about eight months ago, I thought she was crazy. Up until eight months ago i was going to be a marine biologist. something i thought i loved the most, i dreamed about working with dolphins and whales.
The first half of this semester was swift and I can’t believe how fast it passed by. College is a whole new world for me that I had never imagined with a lot of new experiences that I hope will shift me into a better and smarter person. There are more things I can do in college that I would have never dared to do in high school and I am happy for these new freedoms. I am able to eat in class, leave class without asking and they don’t care if I pay attention or not. My high school teachers would always tell me to wait for the bell, sometimes would not let me leave and if I did not pay attention they would yell.
Psychology is defined as “the scientific study of the mind and behavior” (Introduction to Psychology, 2015). Psychology provides an overview of biology and behavior, sensation and perception, learning, memory, intelligence, language, motivation, emotion, abnormal psychology, and therapy (PSY 102 Course Syllabus, 2018, pg 1). Because psychology allows for a better understanding of how the mind and body work, this knowledge can be beneficial for any field of study or career. The theoretical and practical understanding of the basics of psychology can help with decision-making, critical thinking, stress management, time management, better understanding of others, improving communication, and even achieving goals and objectives, all components that allow someone to be more successful throughout their life. Throughout this course I hope to gain a greater understanding of historical and theoretical perspectives of human behavior and development (PSY 102 Course Syllabus, 2018, pg 2).
