Personal Narrative: My Best Placement

My BIST placement was at Highland Pines School, a special needs school. I was in their gym class and in their pool classroom. I was giving the opportunity many times to run gym class by myself, take attendance, do paperwork, organize practices and help run slideshows for assemblies. I was able to get a great idea of what it would be like to be a physical education teacher for special needs students. I learned many things about the work world from my experience. Such as some employees may not get along, some people may not like their job so they will try and bring you down, you will have good and bad days, and you will create many great friendships that will last a lifetime through your job. My least favorite part of my job was having to leave the students and staff and go home. A couple things that I learned about myself is that I can be a teacher and I fit right in with all the other staff there. I learned how to understand why special needs children behave the way they do and what to do if one starts freaking out. I learned to always keep watch out because some students like to attack if you are not watching. Finally, I learned that this is the career I was to pursue for the rest of my life. Working with special needs children makes my day better and brings joy to me. Many people have told me the past years not to go into education because they do not get paid enough, so I was second guessing myself. But, being at Highland Pines made me realize that it is not about the money it is about doing something that makes you happy and teaching is the thing that makes me happy. The only recommendation I would make it to try and get the BIST program known more. I had no idea about it until a teacher told me about it. I feel like it is a great opportunity and that more students should take advantage of
