When I started high school, the club that excited me the most, was National Honors Society. So, at the first chance I got, in my sophomore year. After being a member for a year, I quickly realized that I wanted to take on a leadership opportunity in the club. So, I took a shot for the stars, and campaigned for being president of Honors Society. Though I had some competition, I put my all into composing a speech, and I won the presidency, and I have been president since.
I am doing well this week, I am getting better at setting and accomplishing my daily goals and my time management seems to be improving. With the help of some online tools and determination I have been able to focus and not put off my work. There is still a lot of room for improvement that I will continue to address. I think the StrengthsQuest was somewhat accurate; it helped me indentify what motivates me, the type of environment that I would most likely thrive in, and how my strengths can help me succeed academically, as an example: “competition”, which is one of my signature strengths implies that I am more likely to be fulfilled in an environment where performance is monitored and rewarded, such as a bell curved class. My strength in “command”
I absolutely love music and it has made a huge impact on my life. I’ve sang ever since I could, even though children singing isn’t always the prettiest sound. I currently play two instruments. I’ve played guitar for about 4 years, but I haven’t had the time to play it between my heavy school load and working 40 hours a week. I just started piano and I am absolutely in love with it.
My personal memoir from this semester was written about a particular game of chess with a friend. I started by spending lots of time listing different ideas, and understanding how well those ideas would fit into a personal memoir format. This paper taught me how to use words to paint a picture in the reader’s mind. It was difficult to find one main point and keep that point relevant throughout the entire paper. Instead, I found it easier to divide the main point up into smaller ideas and explain each of those individually and then connect them all at the end of the paper.
My field experience consisted of attending 3 Newton’s high school volleyball practices and the end of the season playoffs. Upon arrival I was greeted by old friends that are a part of the program. The coaches were not there yet so it was the girls and captains responsibility to set up nets and begin practice. The girls socialized for majority of the time and waited last minute to put up the nets. Once nets were up they would began to stretch and warm up then begin practice without the coaches.
You Can Accomplish Whatever You Want To Accomplish I believe that anyone can accomplish whatever they want to accomplish, as long as they put in the effort and time into that one thing. I am talking about things like sports, art, education, and many other things. You just have to believe in yourself, and tell yourself that you can do it. Some people tell themselves that they can 't do it, but they have to think positive.
From the day I was born, I was instantly labeled by the people surrounding me. To the eyes of many, I was to be a gang child, someone to drop out of school, and someone that merely existed to never fulfill their dreams. Some, many of my close relatives decided that there was no use fighting for something better and instead turned to drugs and gang violence. I grew up in South Central, a place that is pyrotechnic with violence. I was surrounded by people whom thought that being in a gang was the best thing in the world.
I often find myself absentminded and questioning myself “who am I”, and I spontaneously have a conversation with my inner conscience to figure out the answer. The conversation gets frustrating because it cannot produce a solid answer for the simple, yet complicated, question. Although the question contains three syllables, it accommodates an intricate definition of my identity. Unlike a static snapshot, I personally feel that my identity is an ever evolving process. Likewise, multiple identities construct my distinctive identity.
I identify as an African-American, Mexican and Native American woman as well as a first generation, low-income student. My ethnicity and socioeconomic class are two essential entities that make up my identity, entities that I’m proud to claim. With that being said, I realize that the challenges I might face during my time in Spain are going to be based off my racial background, my family’s economic status and quite possibly, my gender. I have become aware that Spaniards will want to place me in some sort of box because of my skin complexion, clothing, and speech etc. I am no stranger to this “box fetish” or the social construct of race and class.
Music is my greatest skill. I started when I was four4 years old when my mom signed me up for piano lessons. and apparently I progressed very rapidly. Every year, I would participate in Certificate of Merit where I would be tested in performance and music theory. Through hours of practice and persistencynot giving up, I was able to pass level ten10 in eighth grade, which would qualifiyed me to become a piano teacher if I wanted to.
A sense of accomplishment is invaluable to a person. Not only does a sense of accomplishment build confidence and faith in oneself, but it also allows one to reflect on how wonderful the journey to the accomplishment was, and how every little struggle and triumph was worth it. In the middle of summer, where time seems endless and the stress of the previous school year has been shed by students, I never expected to find out that I scored a five on both of the advanced placement exams I took. Nor did I have one-hundred percent confidence the goals we set as section leaders of the marching band would actually be met. Yet to my surprise, I had the good fortune of accomplishing challenging things in both aspects of my life.
