My Educational Success while attending Northeastern Illinois University
In 1988, right after high school, I enrolled into Northeastern Illinois University. My goal was to become a child psychologist. I chose this field because I felt that many of my friends were left to deal with circumstances that no child should live with, without someone guiding them through the trauma and pain in healing so that they might become functioning adults and parents with fewer complications in society. I was excited to follow my dream; during this time, I was a young married teenager with a year old child. I did not have much of what we know now as a family support system. First, attendance is key, if a student misses a class; the student will miss materials. Secondly, communication, the student should always communicate with their assigned advisor and professors it is extremely important. The student should let their professor know, if said student won’t be attending class, especially if the student knows in advance. The professor(s) may be able to give the student worksheet(s), so that the student won’t miss a step. Thirdly, seek help if the student does not understand a topic or the material. Through our officer trainings, regional and international, I have made it my mission to learn all that is being taught and apply it to my personal and work life. Most of all, to share it with others since becoming a member of Phi Theta Kappa, I feel that dedication, continuing education and empowerment, inclusivity is essential for one’s success.
