Failing Already Ring, ring! The bell sounded releasing us to 7th period. The second day of sophomore year was almost halfway over. Weaving my way through the crowded hallway of confused freshmen and smug upperclassmen, I glanced at my schedule, searching for my next class. AP World History. As a freshman, I remember seeing the older students stressing out about that class. I remember hearing their complaints as I walked through the halls to class. After sprinting across the building, I reached the classroom. A cluster of students already gathered at the entrance. This is it. I thought, taking a deep breath. My first AP class. “Find your name and take your seat,” he repeated, tilting his clipboard revealing a grid with names scribbled inside each box. I worked my way down the chart, unable to see my name. I began to feel anxious. Half way through the sheet and my name was still nowhere to be found. Other students stepped up beside me, quickly finding their names. Panicking, the names started to dance around the page. I could feel the teacher growing impatient as I continued to stare at the paper for over a minute. Finally, after eons of searching, I found my name on the box labeled Seat 21. Just as I looked up to enter the room, the teacher sighed. Shaking his head, he muttered in a dry tone, “Failing already.” Mortified, I gave a sheepish smile and awkwardly walked inside. Packed with blurry familiar faces, the dark room emitted the strange scent of old crayons, adding to my anxiety. Still shaken from the teacher’s comment, I trudged down the rows, scanning each desk for the number 21. I located my seat at the front of one row.
