Today was my first tutoring session. It was both over whelming and relaxing at the same time. When I first got there it was a bit over whelming trying to figure out where my session was and finding all the materials I needed. There was also an awkward transition between the session before mine leaving the room and myself getting into the room. The session before me went over their time, so I really didn’t have time to set up or prepare my space, which made me feel unprepared to start. Furthermore, I found the TA who sort of act as the supervisors at the program was not overly helpful. I was able to keep this pretty causal and make it seem more like an activity than a test. For example, we played a game with lettered blocks and I incorporated a way for him to say the letter names and sounds into the game that is how I asset those skills. After that I used small white boards and markers to write sight words, which he copied and then read. This allowed me to see his printing skills as well as evaluate his level of reading. He then told me that he really liked writing, so I asked him to write a few sentences about his hockey team. He had such a hard time coming up with sentences to write and just wanted me to tell him what to write. So I tried to just ask questions about his team and when he would answer, I would say why don’t you write your answer down. I found it quite interesting that he had trouble thinking of things to write. After this part of the session we took a break, I got him a snack and I just read a few stories to him. I felt after all those little assessments it was his turn to relax. I used an app on my iPad called Epic, which is full of children’s books. I allowed him to look through the app and find the stories that I would read. This allowed me a chance to see where his interests
