Coming from a Mexican background and first time generation College student, I have had to face the difficulties with being first. When I was younger, I noticed that most of my classmates were not in the same boat as I was. This led to me thinking less of myself and being embarrassed of where I came from. As I grew older, I found classmates who were in the same situation as I was and suddenly my background was not the burden I thought it was. I learned to accept who I am and feel apart of something once I discovered some of class mates come from the same origins.
I am Hmong-American student, I am seventeen years old. My hometown is in Wausau Wisconsin in the United States. I attend Wausau West High School and it will be my last year. My relationship with my family is great.

I am a firm believer in academia being the top priority while in college and I have proven this attitude through my performance over the past semester. Why do you want to be a Resident Assistant again next year? I want to be a RA next year again to keep improving the lives of students on campus through building community, planning programs, and being available to residents. First I want to build community by making everyone in my house feel welcome and appreciated. Welcoming starts on move in day and continues throughout the year with conversations and having an open.
As a member of a working class community, my life has been a struggle between resources and opportunities available for me. Having sparse resources has lead me to the constant push of working towards the things I’ve achieved. Social identities have become a guidance for my future goals and abilities. Being working class Latina, raised in a Catholic family has created many barriers and pathways into the future I wish to hold. Furthermore, taking all the social identities I have grew into have become the bases for my educational goals and identity.
Resident Assistants serve many purposes and play many roles in the community. They help to build and promote a supportive and active community within their residence hall and across the campus, and offer support and guidance to their residents. This aids in making Geneseo feel more like home and a community rather than simply a school. RAs enforce Geneseo and Department of Student Life rules, while also being a more easily accessible and less intimidating resource to other students in need of help. I want to be an RA so that I can become more involved in the Geneseo community in a positive way, by helping and representing other students.
Holding an RHA position requires a plethora of skills in leadership, personal balance, academic balance, professional balance, and communication. Currently I am seeking a future in the Resident Assistant (RA) positon which will allow me to learn and utilize these skills when providing conflict resolution and creating relationships within my hall. At the age of____, I left everything behind in Armenia and migrated into the United States of America to start a new life. Even though I love my paternal land and do not forget where I come from, the fact that I could pursue a career and become a productive member of the society encouraged me to move to America. To my great misfortune, I was persecuted for being politically active in my own country and I could no longer fight with the authorities for violating my civil rights. I had the potential of facing more dangerous situations than I was already in at the time. I am my parent’s first child
I know that being a RA would be optimal for me since I want to be part of a community. Being apart of a community is a key factor of being successful in college. I want to be a support system to my residents and fellow staff members. It is a highly rewarding experience when you feel like you have made a difference in someone’s life. I pledge to initiate a change in all of my residents lives.
Over the weekend I interviewed a Platteville RA (Resident Assistant), because they generally have good advice to incoming classes. RA’s deal with any problem on their wing or the whole building when on call. Zach Hahn is the RA on the eastside of Southwest Hall on floor three. Scheduling an interview with this popular man was challenging, although the interview was brief he shared some valuable information. Incoming freshman should know what happens when a student must be written up, why the first month of school is the busiest time, and lastly what is the best part about being a RA.
My family has always been the center of my universe. They’ve taught me the importance of being united and taking care of one another—because in the end, all we truly have is each other. My parents have raised me to be a good daughter, sister, and citizen. They’ve shaped me to be respectful, responsible, and virtuous, knowing these values will last a lifetime. But above all, my parents have instilled in me an appreciation and eagerness for education.
My first semester as an RA at Ithaca College has come and gone with its own unique set of challenges, lessons, and experiences. Over the past four and a half months I have adjusted to a new kind of college experience, formed many new relationships, and can honestly look back at it all and say I am truly gratified and appreciative of the opportunity given to me. All of these factors have driven my decision to try and further my role with Reslife and pursue a position as an Apartment Assistant. There is an abundance of obvious reasons as to why I, or anyone else for that matter, would be interested in working as an AA. It is clearly a nicer living environment compared to the average room in the Res Halls providing more freedom and privacy.
The first eight years of my life, I spent in India where I was born. Growing up I was constantly reminded by my parents that I needed to make them proud by getting a good job and living a good lifestyle. They told me this because they did not want to see me live a hard life like they did. When I was nine years old, I moved from India to the United States of America. The reason why I moved to America was not because I was living a bad life in India, it was so that I could have a better education and more opportunities in life.
As a teenager moving to a new country with a different culture, different language, and being thousands of miles away from everyone I grew up with was not an easy change, however, that was precisely what I did in January of 2013 when I came to the United States with my father. My whole world changed since, and shaped my way of thinking. From learning English, adjusting to a new culture, experiencing my first snow and finding my way in my new country, my life has been an exciting adventure. My parents brought me to America almost 5 years ago to have a better life, and to get a better education.
