The manager I interviewed is Mrs. Murphree, she is a Manager of Operations for an insurance company called Blue Cross Blue Shield. I chose to interview her because she is the person I usually go to for advice as she is great at problem solving. She has been working for this company for the past 17 years. She chose this profession because she enjoys the healthcare field, and because of her other career as a nurse it made sense to her. She has worked her way up through the ranks to manager status and she hopes that her vast knowledge of the industry and the many roles that she has filled along the way will make her a great manager for her associates. She also thinks what lead her to take this job is that she inherently oversees work others perform. …show more content…

Mrs. Murphree is a front-line manager that believes the difference between leadership and management is that a leader leads by example with integrity, and a being a manager is a role given to focus on a general task or goal such as career development. Her job title is Manager of Operations, she is responsible for many tasks such as oversight of the educational program, reporting savings, data analysis, oversight of all the phone calls and emails coming in and out of her department, most of the approvals, meeting with representatives for state plan, and complying with code guidelines. Her span of control is eighteen plus vendors. She believes to be a fair and honest leader but she does not “ sugar coat” anything. According to her, charismatic leader is not a term others would use to describe her, but she also does not think it is something important as she rated it the least important source of power compared to expertise which is, in her opinion, most important. When a position becomes available the manager reaches out to the Talent Acquisition Representative from the Human Recourses department which will asks for feedback such as if the applicant has to be external or internal ( internal is prefered in general) and the representative will then post the ad on the company’s website and other job hunting websites and will give applications to the manager for interviews or others if the manager decides to delegate the task. Based on the attitude of the applicant during the interview which for Mrs. Murphree is usually over the phone so she has no face to face contact which makes the process harder she decides and sometimes switches back and forth between structural and behavioral interviews. The decision factors are if there are things the interviewers is worried about in the resume or if the applicant seems to be hiding something or is uncomfortable past stress when asked certain questions. Interviews are really important as the employees are trusted with very important private information from the clientele through open-book management, the company made that decision because they believe knowing the common goal will increase participation and loyalty if the employees feel more invested in that goal creating a personal drive toward that goal.
