I went to my hometown Arkadelphia, Arkansas, I ran across family friend by the name of Billy Ray at the family gathering. I gave him a hug and signed to him,””. He replied, “Hey”. I informed him that I was taking ASL. I asked,” Did he remember me?” He said, “Yes!” Meanwhile, I have not seen him since I lived in Arkadelphia. I didn’t expect him to remember everything about me, except who my mother and stepfather were. I laughed and said, “I live in Little Rock and go to college at UALR. I felt uneasy and nervous that we would have fingerspell all the vocabulary. I didn’t think that he would understand what I was signing to him. I also thought maybe he didn’t have proper teaching in ASL. Whatever the case may have been, I was expecting the worst and hoping for the best. When I signed my first sentence I was still a bit nervous. When he replied I was happy. I wanted to continue with the conversation. He made me feel comfortable about asking him questions and asking for him to repeat signs for me. He never once got frustrated with me. If he didn’t understand what I would sign to him, he would ask me to fingerspell my sentence. After the conversation, I felt accomplished. I never thought I would be able to have a fully enhanced conversation with a deaf person. By Billy being a close family friend, I believe he cut out some of my nerves. His comfort allowed my signs to flow and to make sense. Since I had that experience, I would have more conversation the other people inside the deaf community.
The successes I had allowed me to have an efficient conversation with Billy Ray. I could remember vocabulary without having to look in the book. I did have to have a little help from Billy. Overall I remembered most of the vocabulary to help him understand what I wanted him to get out of my questions. Another success was my use of location.
