Personal Narrative: The Anytown Program

As the bus pulled into the campground for the first time, I was worrisome about what was ahead for the next five days. But when I left, my mind was filled with endless knowledge and my heart was completed. Those five days, although very short, allowed me to grow beautifully into the person that I am now. The experience that was gained gave me the idea of the open-minded person that I intend to be. The Anytown program, established by the National Conference for Community and Justice in Connecticut, undoubtedly changed my life forever. The young, shy girl I was before this program cannot compare to the intensely passionate and knowledge-seeking woman that I believe to be now. At the Anytown program I gained a better understanding about prejudice reduction and the origins of prejudice including how it affects others. I learned about various social injustices that occur on a daily basis including discrimination, sexism, bias, etc. Anytown taught me that differences should indeed be celebrated because ultimately that is what makes people who they are. I took it upon myself with the help of a few friends who also attended the Anytown program to establish my schools very first Action Club with the purpose to take the information learned at the program and implement it into our schools. The key of this club was too make it very including of everyone because we wanted it to be as diverse as possible and welcoming as possible. A great deal of critical thinking had to come in to play when deciding to implement this extra-curricular school program because I had never done something like this before. I knew it would be tremendous work but this did not deter me from this mission. I have a natural ability to lead and I do not back away from challenges thrown my way. I love to see them as an opportunity to step outside of my previous comfort zone and be presented with a chance to learn something
