The day the sky appeared broken is probably what first alarmed people into thinking something were wrong. Not to mention the unnatural occurrences that led up to it in the first place, causing an up rise in panic throughout the population. Not that you could blame them though. It was that day in which everything we humans knew changed. Towns and cities were left in ruins and civilisation eradicated. Those of us who managed to survive were thrust into what is now called the ‘New World’. The reign of the humans was over, and new predators placed on top. *** That wretched day when the fatal sequence of events was initiated started when the weather took a turn for the worst. Only the occasional spark of lightning lit the otherwise dark world. Never before had the weather changed so drastically in such a short period as it did then. I began to pick up my pace, practically sprinting to get back home and out of the rainstorm. Irked and irritated, I grumbled to myself in annoyance, conscious to the fact that I’d left my only coat at home. It was undeniably definite that I was going to catch a cold. On the other side of the street was a young woman, also rushing down the sidewalk, fiddling with an umbrella that refused to open. Although, I doubt it would have done much good anyway when the whistles of wind picked up, turning into a strong gale that pounded against us. Frigid pellets of rain had beat down heavily in a harsh attack. Drenched clothes clung to me like a second skin and clumps of dark hair became plastered to my face. Shivers coursed their way up my spine as the cold seeped in. I hugged the thin jacket tighter around myself, an attempt to try to savour some warmth. Sharp gusts of wind fought mercilessly against me; a ruthless onslaught that pushed me back as I tried to wade my way through the knee-deep waters, made by the progressing
