Not just any middle student would know that the White Spotted Jellyfish can weigh up to 25 pounds. There is only one place in the entire school where a student could learn something like that. Science Olympiad is an after-school activity that students enjoy because they learn new information, meet their friends, and experience new information. Everyone wants some new, interesting information to show off to their friends and family, and Science Olympiad is the perfect place to get it. For one, students get to choose what they learn because they pick their events based on what they like or what seems exciting to them. This means they are never bored because they get to learn about a topic they are interested in. Also, students have an advantage at the competitions when they go into an event with background knowledge on the topic. In my participation, I got to learn more than 100 invasive species in my event titled: Invasive Species. I see many friends at Science Olympiad, even if we don't have classes together, which is a nice way to still keep in touch. In addition, this club becomes more enjoyable with friends, so students don’t always have to be strictly working. On the other hand, if students get partners that aren’t already their friends, that usually changes by the end of the club. Students are forced to work with each other for hours a week, so they get to know each other pretty well. Also, if a kid and his partner both enjoy Science Olympiad, then it is likely that they would both enjoy other activities.
