Personal Philosophy of Nursing Holly McElhaney Oklahoma Wesleyan University NURS3213_ONL Nursing's Role in Healthcare Dr. Mechele Hailey March 17, 2024 Personal Philosophy of Nursing This paper will discuss the author’s personal view of nursing and how it compares to Oklahoma Wesleyan University’s Conceptual Framework. It will also discuss the Dreyfus Model according to Dr. Patricia Benner and what stage of nursing practice the author can relate to. The author of this paper is a full-time BSN student, a registered nurse for almost 5 years, and currently works in critical care. This profession can be very rewarding, but also very draining, both mentally and physically. At the same time, it is an honor to help provide care and comfort to someone in their most vulnerable moments. Nursing can also become something that it wasn’t originally intended for, like money, numbers, deadlines, policies, or facilities success. When an employer becomes obsessed with these things, it can cause nurses to experience burnout. This is a major downfall of the nursing profession. In turn, it causes nurses to leave, which adds to the growing shortage of nurses in the workplace. Oklahoma Wesleyan University’s Conceptual Framework The author, a BSN student at OKWU, will compare and contrast their personal view of nursing with this university’s framework. The first component of the framework is the use of the Neuman Systems Model of Nursing. This model is the basic concept of nursing. It includes a holistic approach to patient care, has an open system of a continuous flow of input and output, and focuses on the nursing process and interventions. All of these concepts are important to the nursing profession. The Dreyfus Model According to Dr. Patricia Benner, Nurses can range from novice to expert, according to Dr. Benner. This model can be used to help increase retention of nurses. Nurses can experience all of these stages throughout their career (Davis, RN & Maisano, PhD, RN, CNE, 2016). The author feels they are in the right stage of this model. At this stage, the nurse feels they have real life experience and is able to prioritize tasks from previous experiences (Davis, RN & Maisano, PhD, RN, CNE, 2016). As an occasional team lead in an ICU, the author feels they have been able to use past experience to help their team prioritize tasks and match certain team members up with appropriate patients according to their skills and experience. In turn, the patients get the best care possible. Conclusion In conclusion, being a nurse is an honor and a privilege. The author’s personal view of nursing lines up with the OKWU’s Conceptual Framework. As a competent nurse, the author is also able to rely on organizational skills and advanced planning (Benner's from Novice to Expert - Nursing Theory, n.d.). This can help in many
