Since beginning the nursing program, my perspective of nursing practice has changed. My original desire as to why I wanted to become a nurse was to help people, see these people become healthy, and to follow in my mother's footsteps. I thought that the job of the nurse was merely just to provide care, focus on the disease that the patient has, and to follow doctor orders. Today, however, I do not hold the same opinions and desire as before. I now understand that the role of the nurse is not only to provide care but to create therapeutic relationships with clients, focus on strength-based nursing, be empathic, and to advocate for their patients when injustice occurs. Through lectures and lab, I have realized that nursing is not "just a job," but rather a “calling” of devoting oneself to caring for patients according to the high values and standards of the profession. …show more content…

For our classroom assignment, we were asked a series of questions as to why we chose nursing as a profession. For 1060, we were asked the following questions: “why I chose nursing” (I wrote, to help and care for individuals like how nurses cared for me while I was in the hospital, as well as for my desire to become a nurse) “For me nursing means?” (Being a leader, promoting health, wellbeing, healthy environment, and justice) and “how will I make a difference in nursing?” (Taking what I learned through my four years and applying my practice and knowledge in my work to provide proper care to the patient. I will achieve this through my ethical practice and skills learned throughout the four
