I have been building, drawing, and designing for as long as I can remember; therefore it is acceptable to say I have taken on the challenge to receive a Masters in Architecture at the University of Kansas. The education I have received here has been incomparable, however, I feel it will never be complete without the exposure to a different culture and way of life. I firmly believe that people who study abroad open themselves up to valuable experiences. I am extremely thrilled and excited about pursuing my education in a place that has been world renown within the field of architecture. The most helpful resource when preparing for this trip was my peers. Numerous students in years ahead let me know just what to expect when I travel overseas. It was helpful to know what the classroom and studio setting would be like, and how to balance my schoolwork with exciting weekend excursions. Among these peers, my oldest brother had also studied on the east coast of Australia a few years prior. He gave me unique insight on what it would be like to immerse myself in a completely different environment. Although he was located at a different university, he helped me understand how the culture would differ from the one I have grown up knowing. Researching the university I would attend was also extremely beneficial. As I confirmed that Newcastle was the right place for me in terms of developing my future career, I thoroughly studied the courses and how they would help me to grow on a professional level. I learned the university In contrast to the immense research I have done, I feel the only way I can completely absorb the benefits of a semester abroad, is to be open to new ideas. Although some of the experiences I encounter will be outside my comfort level, I am allowing myself be completely vulnerable to these new experiences. Although I plan on practicing Architecture in the United States, I believe that studying the differences between the Australian way of design and that of the United States would benefit me a great deal in the future. New people and surroundings will not only broaden my perspective of life, but will enrich my future work on a professional level. On a personal level, I hope to become more independent in the way I live. I am excited for the opportunity to be away from a place I have known my whole life, and experience a new way of living. Although it will be difficult at first to not have the ease of communication with friends or family, it will force me to make connections with people who have the same passions as myself. At this point in my life, I plan to take advantage of all the opportunities that come my way because I may only have the chance to experience them once in my life.
