In the mid-1980s, my newlywed parents immigrated to the United States from Mexico seeking to build a better life for themselves and their forthcoming family. With only a small suitcase of clothes and little money, they came devoted and eager to start a new chapter on foreign land. Over time they encountered overwhelming struggles and hardships but, nevertheless, they managed to stay loyal to their profound culture. Growing up as a daughter to immigrant parents with strong beliefs and values, I have been deeply influenced who I am as an individual. Their encounters with numerous hardships have greatly motivated and inspired me to challenge myself to be the best person I can be. As I attended my sister’s first DSP research presentation, I began to have an inclination towards one field: Biology. I was still at a young age so I wasn’t able to fully grasp the idea of biology. When I entered high school, I was grounded to two careers: law and medicine. After taking health science classes and receiving the opportunity to shadow the different departments at my local hospital, I realized that embarking on a medical journey was what I wanted to pursue. Influenced by my sister, biology caught my attention for a major. Following my AP Biology course in high school, I knew majoring in biology would create an enjoyable and smooth pathway to medicine. Studying biology will prepare me for medical school in showing me the complexities of life and how it all comes together as if working like a machine. Pursuing a degree in biology will fulfill my desire in fully understanding human nature and nature itself. From vaccines to organ transplants, innovations in medicine have changed the world and my goal is to be able to bring an innovation to an underprivileged community one day. Pursuing a career in medicine will fulfill that urge inside me in not only guiding a community towards a healthier lifestyle, but also bringing innovations to medicine and inspiring the generations ahead of me.
