Personal Statement: A Career In Medicine

As a young child I have always wanted to help people because it was rewarding. Living in a small town in Uzbekistan, I would watch my mother help people and use her nursing skills to treat them. She used to work in a hospital and after her shift was over, she would give our neighbors injections or check their blood pressure. Seeing the satisfaction my mother felt by helping them made me feel joyous and one day I wanted to help people myself. My mother has inspired me and motivated me to pursue a career in medicine; specifically, nursing because I wanted to do something in my life's work that is stimulating, fulfilling and makes a difference in people's lives.

When I was little, I liked to climb trees and harvest fruits. One day as I was coming down, I fell and cut my chin on the edge of a stump. I immediately went home and started cleaning my wound because I was shocked. As I looked in the mirror I noticed that the cut was big and the fat on my chin was hanging down. I rushed to the room where my mom was because I knew she would be able to help me. My mom was calm, cool, and collected. She did not panic, and she used a sterilized needle and thread to stitch my cut. My mother's quick thinking and actions saved us the trouble of going to the hospital and my wound healed with unnoticeable scar.
