My interest in Pharmacy originated from an early age when I learnt through medical magazines about how a specific drug would help save and bring positive change to someone's life. This interest reached its peak the day it helped someone I cared about. Through various different medicines, it helped reduce the pain significantly for that person, but also for other family members including myself. This encouraged me to look into Pharmacy as a possible future career, where I could help make a difference to other people's lives by providing the best available medicinal for them. Volunteering two periods a week in a programme at my local primary school helping younger pupils with numeracy and literacy has also boosted my confidence. Having secured a work placement in a Pharmacy, I am fully familiar with the role of a Pharmacist and the skills needed. I found it to be a highly beneficial and challenging experience. Through observation I learnt multiple aspects of a career in Pharmacy, and about the responsibility a Pharmacist has as they must work with very high precision, making sure not to give incorrect medicine or even make slight dosage errors, as it could have devastating effects. Other skills I learnt were how to dispense prescriptions and print labels for specific prescriptions. I also learnt about the drugs which were most commonly prescribed in the community. Seeing how some customers would become aggressive or agitated I learnt a lot from the Pharmacists who dealt with these situations in a calm and supportive manner.
