My introduction to Pharmacy was when I was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder, which I was prescribed a medication to help control the disorder. I learned how the medicine affects my dopamine levels so I can stay more focused. In addition, I learned about handling the side effects, and drug interactions. Later on, I consulted with a guidance counselor, took a strength quest assessment and volunteered at my local nursing home. From all of this, I found out what I want to do in life; Pharmacy. I selected Pharmacy as a career because I want to make an impact in the lives of others; I want to share the knowledge I have with other individuals in hopes that it will better impact lives. With viral outbreaks taking place the past two decades, I want to establish a mass global immunization to prevent the spread of disease. I want to educate on an international stance the techniques that can improve resistance to disease or sickness in that those individuals can live healthier lives. Coming from a large household, I am one of seven children and with my Parents from Nigeria in West Africa, I am always reminded to appreciate access to health care here in the United States.
My current experience as a pharmacy technician at Texas Health Resources will help me attain my goals. Aside from learning about the different medications, I have gained a better understanding of the pharmacists’ role of monitoring drug regimes, allergies, adverse effects and the drug dosing. I appreciate my job as a pharmacy technician in the hospital so abundantly; it has encouraged me to pursue my direction to the clinical pharmacy setting.
