I always relied on my parents for everything I needed. If I was ever in need my parents were the first people I went to until a few months ago. I am so grateful for everything my parents do but I would have never truly understood the depth of their responsibilities until I took some responsibility upon myself, by getting a job. I never realized how many things my parents provided me with and how valuable those things were. I was not forced to get a job but I thought it was an appropriate time. I am happy I made this decision because I can finally do certain things on my own. Although this is somewhat true I also realized just how hard my parents had to work to provide me with what I have. As many people don’t realize there are so many things I need to be aware of and many things I am responsible for while at work. My job is mainly to make the customers happy. I am also responsible for keeping the workplace sanitary, and lastly I am responsible for all the money in my register. These may seem like a few small tasks but in a busy rest stop I have no time to make mistakes. Every day that I go to work, I put in my head that I can be making someone’s day just a little better and it motivates me to work hard to do just that. During the summer I would work eight hour shifts and would barely see my friends. They would always tell me, “You work too much!” My response would always be that I’m living in the real world now. I have to work in order to help pay bills. I have taken the responsibility to pay for at least one bill to help my parents. I also help occasionally with grocery shopping which can sometimes be tough because of my large family. I used to complain about these responsibilities but I embrace them now. Knowing I can turn someone's day around by making a simple cup of coffee fills me with joy. I have met such a wide variety of people who are traveling from all over. Hearing occasional stories from travelers about a trip and how the coffee I made is turning their trip around. I have met such a wide variety of customers and I see both the good and bad in the world. I smile the most when I see someone who doesn’t look too happy or a customer who seems to be angry. I smile at the people who smile at me and patient when ordering. I try my best to smile at everyone who comes in because sometimes just a smile can turn someone's day around; smiling has become a habit both at work and in my life
