Christian nurses are given the unique ability to provide compassionate and spiritual care to a variety of patients. The purpose of this paper is to explain my definition of nursing as a caring art, describe how Christian faith impacts caring, describe my personal philosophy of nursing while identifying my own personal values and beliefs, and discus how my beliefs impact my nursing practice. To me, nursing as an art of caring, is defined as caring for the whole person, building meaningful relationships, and providing compassionate care. Holistic nursing care involves healing a person physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I believe the art of nursing is embedded in the steps we take to address problems that are not simply physical.
This is a personal statement for my application to the Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration in the Ball State School of Nursing. My personal statement provides details on my personal background and the unique impact that Family Nurse Practitioners have had on my life. I describe my undergraduate studies and how I firsthand gained interest as well as insight on the skills of a Family Nurse Practitioner. I go into detail about my aspiration to be a Family Nurse Practitioner to directly affect the patient care of a variety of patient populations. Introduction: As a first year student I have very specific goals in mind that I hope to achieve through my work in college. My main hopes for the future are that I pass all of my exams in the coming years, graduate and receive my honours degree in general nursing, become a registered nurse and finally get a job as a nurse. Personal Statement for Nursing School “When a person decides to become a Nurse. They make the most important decision of their lives. They choose to dedicate themselves to the care of others” Growing up in Nigeria; I had my first introduction to the field of medicine at the age of 6. At the time, my grand father was a holistic doctor at my local community. Whenever my grandfather went to work, he would take me with him and I remembered being very fascinated by how people would come in to get treatments for different kinds of diseases.
Nursing, and everything that it entails, cannot be easily described in just one simple word or phrase. It goes beyond the meaning of a profession and the stereotypical definition of treating the ill. Nursing is the “protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2010, p. 1). Therefore, it is a career that requires dedication, passion, critical thinking, and knowledge. It demands commitment and an understanding of its core values and concepts, as well as the nurse’s own personal philosophy and principles.
Among the reasons for deciding to apply for a mental health nursing course, my 'why' and motivation to pursue a career as a mental health nurse was experiencing the loss of my best friend unfortunately due to suicide. Such a life-changing loss deepened my existing drive to want to help people recover and heal from mental health struggles and traumatic experiences. The human mind is so complex and a phenomenon that I find intriguing and love to learn about, particularly human mental processes, mental health disorders and behaviours. I believe I am suitable for this course because, alongside having a passion for helping the community to cope with mental illnesses and my compassionate, nurturing characteristics.
Over the last ten years of working within the health care sector I’ve worked closely with mental health nurses, listening to their personal experiences in a wide variety of settings. Extensive research, work experience and personal experiences of mental health issues such as my son’s recent diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder has inspired me to pursue a mental health nursing qualification. Mental health nursing promotes and highlights relevant skills that I have acquired over the years that are crucial in this role. Courage to trust my own judgement and competence to make decisions in often highly stressful situations has lead me to be promoted to team leader at work.
The rapid growth in developing countries like Ghana is mostly accompanied by the expansion of health facilities with critical care units (CCUs) being in focus. The expansion of the critical care services is often faced with challenges in expertise in critical care nursing. Newman 2003, stated that the experience of critical care nursing cannot be separated from the world in which they thrive. Thus, being up to the task of delivering optimal care should be coupled with expanding our knowledge in the critical care nursing.
I have a heart for service and a strong desire to make a difference in people’s lives. Becoming a nurse I will be able to fulfill my passion of making a positive impact on individual lives on a daily basis. I will be able to fulfill my nurturing and caring desires of helping others. I’m very passionate and fascinated with the medical field in all aspects. I strive for excellence, integrity and love interacting with all diversity of people.
After completing an overnight shift caring for twenty critically ill patients in on her own, Nurse Barabra Nshemereinwe graciously agreed to let me interview her. She flashed a weary smile as she told us that the hospital was fortunate to have a backup generator that would start during the frequent power outages they encountered. My team then followed her to a tiny storage room, crammed with what once was tens of thousands of dollars worth of donated medical equipment. As she explained how power surges had rendered many of these medical devices inoperable, I jotted down “SURGE PROTECTION” to make sure to incorporate this crucial insight into our revised prototype.
I first acknowledged the importance of healthcare and my desire to study nursing years ago when I started working at a medical clinic. Although I spent most of my time filing patients’ notes and other documents, I learned a lot by listening. This simple act had a complementary effect that enhanced my strategic-thinking skills and my ability to communicate. By working alongside nurses and practitioners, I discovered that with these acquired listening skills and the appropriate medical training, I could be a successful nurse.
I will achieve this academic year with success by designing a revision time table today that I will help me to plan all my work from now until the end of the year which is the 30 of June. By the beginning of the next academic year, I will attend Nursing University. This will be accomplish by starting my own way through researches and proposing myself as a universities candidate at the UCAS, taking test and Interview at the Universities. By the end of this first semester, I plan to successful pass my reading exam. My target will be achieve by engaging myself on reading any kind of book such as newspapers, course handouts and or novels.
My Childhood days was a mixture of bitter emotions and worth challenging, as my father neglected two- kids including me, sister and my mother at a very young age, my mother was a nurse, but my father never allowed her to work, but soon after he left us, my mother forced to resume her job once again, as there was no other way rather to work for the upbringing of two kids. My grandmother (mother’s mother) was a great support to us as she stood as the pillar of care to my mother. She worked as a local vegetable seller and struggled hard to save her daughter and two kids, it was her boldness and god fearing attitude which inspired my mother to rejuvenate the lost life. I felt each and every pain experienced by my mother’s to continue my education, soon after secondary education, it’s time for me to select suitable professional career, that is the time when nursing was at its boom and finally I decided to pursue nursing as a career, it was a dream come true and there was a long tunnel in my life with only aim to care my family.
As a nursing student, I have a grasp on what nursing is through textbooks and lectures. The more I learn about this profession, the more I learn about what my philosophy is. Although I haven’t gained clinical experience as a nurse, I have gained some clinical experience as a nurse assistant that helps me administer patient care while acquiring knowledge working under the supervision of nurses. This experience helps me to become knowledgeable on what their roles and responsibilities are, and it has inspired me that I hope when I graduate, to equal their skill, diligence and passion.
