Personal Statement on Ethics and Professionalism What personal beliefs inform my work as an acupuncturist? There are two ways that I would like to answer this question. One way I view this question is how my personal beliefs could potentially impact my work as an acupuncturist. From this perspective I would need to become fully conscious of my own personal beliefs to then have full awareness of their impact. From this point I would need to then evaluate how they may be influencing me when communicating and treating a patient. Integrity is something else I hold highly when it comes to personal beliefs, because I believe I should always be open and honest when communicating with patients about their health and how I can help them. My personal beliefs are also what inform me of why I want to become an acupuncturist in the first place through believing there is a way to help others in a holistic way that can treat the whole human being. That we are interconnected beings and can apply ways of treating someone as such. However, this could also be a viewpoint that my patients may have trouble understanding or not believe in themselves. Therefore, acknowledging my own personal beliefs that may inform how I operate as an acupuncturist is helpful and can guide me. To do so, I first need to understand the challenges that I may face in which the article titled “Perspective: The problem with the problem of professionalism” points out very thoroughly. Having efficient plans set in place for potential issues with professionalism would be applied at my place of work. One such plan would include avoiding staff conflict through holding a weekly meeting to address concerns and present solutions to prevent problems that could arise in the future. These problems could include possible actions that the staff members are taking towards each other that may be unprofessional such as raising one’s voice to others, talking disrespectfully, not dressing professionally, etc. It would also include any potential actions or attitudes taken inappropriately with patients that does not coincide with a professional and patient relationship. Personally, I show my professionalism through dressing appropriately with scrubs, close toed shoes, having a clean look with my hair and make-up, while always being respectful to my staff and patients. Making sure to always have a professional manner of speaking and communicating with others is important in maintaining professionalism, it also shows confidence and influences trust with patients too.
