There is a lot of pressure put on healthcare professionals to perform to perfection in all aspects of their medical practice. However, this is not logical since they are human and make mistakes. These mistakes occur due to a quality gap which takes approximately 90,000 lives each year (“The Quality Gap: Medicine’s Secret Killer”, 2000). Healthcare professionals can help bridge the gap of quality of care by following certain standards and parameters, taking responsibility, and knowing of the impact that negligence, malpractice, and litigation can have on provider and patient relationships. Like stated above, one of the most important is having an open and honest relationship between patients and providers and between providers and providers. Having good relationships also improves communication which helps minimize error and reduce risk. All healthcare professionals should collaborate with one another and acknowledge the roles of each profession (“The Quality Gap: Medicine’s Secret Killer”, 2000). Like stated in the video, healthcare professionals should sound like a symphony, not the warm to a symphony where everyone is doing their own thing with no teamwork involved (“The Quality Gap: Medicine’s Secret Killer”, 2000). This can minimize error and reduce risk because they can learn from other professionals, they overcome fear of each other, and trust each other (“The Quality Gap: Medicine’s Secret Killer”, 2000).
