Understanding the Profession
After reviewing the NASW Code of Ethics Core Values, a core value that I have demonstrated in the past is the value Integrity. Integrity is trustworthy and honest. I have demonstrated this core value many times throughout my life. Throughout my middle school through college days, there were many instances that I have been the therapist for the people closest to me. I have always respected their privacy and kept everything they told me to myself. The people around me have always known that they can trust me with anything and can trust that I will always do the right things that need to be done in order to help them overcome their challenges. As I was reading the NASW core values, the values of competence caught my eye as it is extremely important for the role that I would like to be a part of. Competence is when social workers work forward to improve their profession. I would like to develop this value because not only does it help myself professionally, but it also helps the patients/clients that I will see in the future and improves the services that will be provided to them. I have always been the counselor for my friends and have always wanted to try my best to improve individuals' lives. I have experienced many of my close friends go through stages of mental health issues, depression, anxiety, abusive relationships, etc. and my goal has always been to make their lives better. I took the steps to help them improve their mental health and wellbeing. I originally got my Bachelors of Arts studying Allied Health because my plan was to become a nurse but after a lot of brainstorming I knew I had a different path I should be following. In addition to my friends turning to me for help I had the unfortunate loss of my aunt when she was thirty four years old. She committed suicide and at that time my family was not aware of her mental struggles. We knew there were “issues” but we did not know the severity of them and that she was in that mindset. If any of us had known how bad it was we would have at least tried to be there for her and do whatever we could do to help her. My goal one day is to have my own practice and knowing that I can work myself towards that goal is exciting to me! I also became more interested in the Clinical aspect of social work because I will be able to take part in assessing, diagnosing, and beginning a treatment plan for my patients. I will get to be the one who sees the improvements of my patients as they go through treatment as well
