Through the National Student Leadership Conference, I will be marching out of my comfort zone and learning qualities that will aid me in becoming a better leader. In my school there are numerous leadership opportunities, from being class president, to being a house captain, to planning a school wide event.
One leadership experience I had was through my athletics at my high school. Every year, our high school volleyball program hosts a camp for young girls to come learn and develop her volleyball skills, as well as do arts and crafts and make new friends. As a varsity player, we all were assigned a different group of girls to be in charge of. We also were given a junior varsity player to help us. I became a leader in this area because I was more experinced and organized.
In the end of my seventh grade year I got recommended by my teachers to be a part of the National Youth Leaders Conference in Washington D.C.. During that conference I learned how to exhibit my gifts and talents and collaborate with other leaders.
A leader is able to gain an audience’s attention because of their personality, morality, and how they hold themself. It is important for a leader to be organized, compassionate, able to compromise but also be firm on what they believe, and be a person who people look up to and aspire to be. I was part of an organization called National Charity League and this organization helped grow women’s confidence, public speaking skills, time management, and organizational skills. Each month, each class holds meetings to plan and discuss projects that follow the class’s focuses. This past year Class of 2023 philanthropic focus is children, cultural focus is international food, and for leadership we are focusing on self care and reflecting on the NCL experience.
Being a part of the Nation Ford Marching band and allocating a great deal of time to an activity played a large role in my growing leadership capabilities. During the first semester of my sophomore year, I was selected to become a mentor for the freshman class of 2026. After previously participating in drum major workshops to support my interest in becoming a stronger leader, I was able to apply the lessons I learned to a real environment. Having the privilege of being a mentor for my section allowed me to gain more confidence by helping others. I found myself enjoying the long, scorching practices because I was happy to be aiding the growth of others- those that needed the confidence I needed during my first year of marching band.
I have shown leadership by being a Sunday School assistant at Reading United Methodist Church. I worked with the younger kids and taught them various life lessons. I also practiced my leadership by being an assistant for the kindergarteners during the K-Ball program. I taught them the basics of basketball and other lessons they will be able to apply in their futures. I am hoping to further develop my leadership skills during the next two years of high school, which will help me lead others more successfully.
I want to serve at kids camp because I love being around and working with kids and I think I could help them grow in their faith and help them have a better understanding of how amazing God's love for them is. I believe that talking about my own experiences and sharing what I know can have a positive impact on them and help them develop a stronger relationship with God. I also enjoy being around kids and the energy they bring to every activity, and I think it would be fun to interact with the kids and get to know them. I hope to work on talking to new people because talking to new people can be a struggle for me sometimes. I think it would be fun and rewarding to be part of a kids camp and to be able to create a supportive environment for them
I am really excited to get this leadership experience as well and because it is this summer, I think that I will be able to learn even more about leadership, and develop more leadership skills as well. Though leadership is a major factor about being a community leader, being sociable and easy to connect to is an important quality to have as well. Being part of Reading Partners, I have had an also had opportunity to teach children how to read and write if they were falling behind in school. I am constantly eager to learn new things, and I found out through this experience, that when I am passionate about learning something new, I work very hard to get it done, and get it done
Since that date in 2009, I have become immersed in the 4-H way of life. Starting this journey through a local club afforded me the opportunity to see the world of 4-H. One of the many great opportunities that I experienced during my time as a 4-H youth was the opportunity to travel to Atlanta, Georgia, as the Forest County 4-H Delegates to National 4-H Congress. I was the first ever delegate selected from my county and it was an honor that myself and my family supported. Through 4-H, I was able to attend leadership retreats where I had the opportunity to participate in activities that pushed me out of my comfort zone to become a better leader and person. When adult staff notice leadership potential in youth, they pick them out and push them to a higher standard to plan leadership events and teach workshops.
I think that this camp would help me learn new skills to accomplish this goal. Along with the speech team, I participate in Joliet Wests group interpretation. If you are unaware of what this is, it is a group performance of a written script using no costumes, props, or set. By taking away these aspects, the performers must create and tell the story using tableaus and through individual and choral lines. It is truly a beautiful thing to both be a part of and to watch.
I am interested in science of God and using that knowledge to lead individuals, groups and communities. My passion is supporting and advocating for various populations on a professional level. Theology is the most relevant foundation in leaders in history and everyday in our respective communities. Through my undergraduate academia, employment and study abroad experience I am confident that this is the right path towards making change. I would like to acquire to the expertise through the Master of Arts in Theology and Leadership program, to fulfill my educational desires in Theology and Leadership and in return serve an array of populations.
She told me how hard it is to take criticism from others and how it is important to learn to take it and grow from it. Learning to understand others and step outside yourself is important in setting aside your pride in order to grow to be a better leader. Working on listening to understand instead of listening to reply is vital in your growth as a leader. Hailey was able to give me some advice that really stuck out to me. A leader brings so many new experiences as well as opportunities and it is important to look outside of yourself and do things you wouldn 't otherwise do.
On June 21st, 2016, Tyvon Davis, Adonia Riley, Trevor Wilson and I attended a Leadership Camp at The Citadel. Since it was during the summer you could see the heat waves on the hoods of cars as we drove to Charleston, SC. Knowing that this week long program would be intense, we were physically prepared but, on the inside we were an emotional wreck. Prior to leaving for this camp, we prepared throughout the school year. Cramming our brains with knowledge and feeling our muscles ache from mile runs.
