In my personal vocational development plan paper, I will be writing about professions in the mental health field, and most importantly which job fits me the most.It is very important to think out the development of what career choice is good for you, and help you have a successful life. I made the decisions based off of my skills and how much education is required, while also looking at my weaknesses to help me find out which jobs are not for me. Over the past few weeks I have been researching the profession of clinical psychology and what they do everyday. The observations and the tests that they perform is the main way psychologists are able to understand a person better or how they act. With these tests they are able to determine what caused a person’s mental or psychological disorder. While it shows a person’s weaknesses, it also shows their strengths. Some tests are used to determine a person’s IQ, personality type, and many other types of tests. One common test is a clinical interview. In clinical interviews, the psychologist will ask the client personal questions, while observing how they reason, interpret information, and how they think. This helps them create a general idea of the specific client and allows them to make a diagnosis and begin planning a treatment plan according to what the client needs. They then monitor the client’s progress through meetings or sessions. The yearly median salary in Maine is $75,280 with a hourly wage of $36.19.("Summary Report," n.d.). It is recommended to get a four year degree in psychology,sociology, or education to help prepare, but it is not a necessity and you are able to have a degree in other areas as well. After receiving a bachelor's in psychology or a subject related to psychology, it would be time to sign up for the Master's degree program. Master degree programs in clinical psychology are possible to get, but it actually doesn’t give the license that clinical psychologist have. Earning a masters should take about 1-2 years to obtain. Finally, after earning a masters, a student can pick between two doctoral degrees to work with in psychology, the PhD and the Psy D. The PhD is more for students who want to prepare their work with researching, while the PsyD helps students prepare for taking clients in.
