Extroverts can be some of the best people you meet. They have plenty to offer and thrive at the attention of others. However, being introverted can be just as great. In a society where being extroverted is the ideal, it can be very difficult to be an introvert. Susan Cain argues in her Ted Talk, “The Power of Introverts”, that introverts can share many brilliant ideas with the world and should be encouraged and celebrated for who they are.
An extrovert lives in the outside world. These people are perceived to be more bold and outgoing. An introvert, in contrast prefers to live inside their mind. They are seen as more quiet and shy. Jack shows the traits of an extrovert from the very beginning.
Morrison’s Recitatif is a thought-provoking story about an inter-racial childhood as two girls partially grow up in an institution without their mothers. Roberta’s mother was sick and Twyla’s mother wanted to dance all night, or so the girls believed. The two girls were able to bond through their life experiences and different predicaments and become friends. As they run into each other various times in adulthood, the story creates an interesting narrative of the views of society as a whole and individual racism. The way this story is set up causes the reader to not have a clear understanding as to how to interpret and perceive the overall narrative.
In Susan Cain’s book, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking she proves that introverts are vital to the world and everything typically thought of “the quiet ones” is wrong. She starts the book by introducing the idea of the introvert. This term is derived from psychologist Carl Jung who basically invented the personality test. When deciding on a name for different types of individuals, he called the more reserved people who gain their energy from being alone and are typically not very open introverts.
Overcoming Stereotypes Twyla once said at the coffee shop, “ A black girl and a white girl meeting in a Howard Johnson’s on the road and having nothing to say. Now we are behaving like sisters separated for much too long.” Twyla wants things to be the same as they were at St. Bonny’s between her and Roberta, but realized that maybe too much time has passed and society has gotten in the way of them staying friends. As the story progresses, the two girls interact in a racially divided America that wants them to be enemies, but the girls hearts prevail and they overcome the stereotypes and stay friends. Inhibition is the brain calming its self-down, in a state of relaxation or sleep, while excitation is the brain waking itself up, being alert or in a learning state. Introverts tend to avoid situations that cause panic very quickly and thoroughly. Whereas extraverts are good at ignoring overwhelming feelings and can forget the ability to feel physically and emotionally, extraverts have a lower level of cortisol arousal compared to introverts (Edward, n.d.). Eysenck theory predicts that introverts require little to no external stimulation to reach an optimal level of cognitive performance, whereas extraverts require more external stimulants. Elvis has shown more characteristics of introversion, according to Sam Phillips, a record producer from Rolling Stones who said “He’s the most introvert out of all of them”.
In the article “Self-Fulfilling Stereotypes” by Mark Snyder, the various researchers help construct evidence of stereotypes in our society. Theses stereotypes affect both men and women as well as various racial stereotypes. For example, Snyder mentions that college students of the opposites sex were to have a phone conversation with one another. Each of the men were given a picture of the women they were supposedly talking to. When some of the men received a photo of an unattractive female, they predicted they would be awkward, unsociable, and boring (Snyder 543).
“Introverts are drawn to the inner world of thought and feeling… extroverts to the external life of people and activities.” This is a quote from Quiet, by Susan Cain. After reading this book about introversion, the way in which I viewed not only myself, but the world, would be unsettled. As an introvert, I am almost never as vocal, nor as spontaneous as extraverts are, but prefer observation, thoughtfulness, and quietness over extreme assertiveness. Growing up, I did not know what introversion was.
Albert Einstein, Dr. Seuss, J. K. Rowling. With such an honorable registry, surely introverts must be appreciated members of society, right? Wrong. As Cain divulges, introverts are put at a disadvantage from the moment they are born, throughout school, and into the workforce, not by any flaw of their own, but by a society that upholds what Cain calls the “Extrovert Ideal”. From kindergarten to office jobs, it’s safe to say that life in America (and other countries, mainly those in the West) is geared towards the gregarious.
It has long been known that sociopaths walk among humanity, perhaps even abusing, hurting, and deceiving the people around them. While the true cause of this psychiatric disorder has been never established, the disorder itself has been established as one that affects a person so deeply on a cognitive and emotional level that it turns a human being into something without any real human qualities such as: emotion, empathy, morality, and complex decision making. In Gibsons Theory of differentiation, babies are constantly looking for ways to overcome obstacles. As their perception changes so does their approach to the obstacle. This is evident when a child tries to descend the stairs. First they may try by sitting on the stair and scooting down one stair at a time. After they become comfortable with that they attempt holding on to the railing and descending on foot down and then feet together.
Extroverts think out loud and on their feet. They prefer talking to listening and rarely find themselves at a loss for words. And occasionally, blurt out things they never meant to say. In our modern society, confident and assertive individuals seem to be favored over the shy and solitary introverts. The society refers introverts as anti-social, tedious, solitary, aloof and give countless negative nametags and they create stereotypes to extroverts. Yet, just because introverts are shy and quiet, that does not always define that non-introverts are superior than introverts. In the past and present, numerous talented people who are known to be introverts changed and impacted the world. From Steve Wozniak, the Apple co-founder to the one of the greatest intelligent scientist, Albert Einstein, they broke the stereotype towards introverts and demonstrated that even shy people can have great leaderships and abilities to influence
Has anyone ever felt self-conscience about them self? What the media says is “pretty” does not help how we feel about ourselves. Everyone has that small thing they wish they could change about themselves whether it is physically or mentally. The little girl in the picture is holding the scissors on her stomach portraying that she wants to cut off the extra skin, while staring at a picture of a tall and skinny model and sitting on many more pictures of models, which makes her think that you have to look like that to be pretty. What society says is “pretty” has a large effect on young girls that notice changes in their bodies and are starting to find themselves, which could affect how they feel about themselves the rest of their lives.
