Personality Traits: Genetic or Environmental Influenced There is a vast amount of evidence that the personality structure or personality traits influences stress and coping styles. Personality traits are also directly connected to communication skills, which are crucial in every professional medical practice and an essential skill for preparing students, for the transition from student to the professional medical industry. Individual interviews were conducted with nine staff nurses currently in practice in acute care settings in the United States. Descriptions that participants provided about their work culture were an unexpected finding that has relevance for nurse educators as they prepare students for transition to practice. (Lux 37) Nurses described lack of management support and intervention for situations, personality clashes with coworkers, and devaluation of nursing work as affecting professional practice, in additional to potential bullying situations as having a negative impact on patient care. Through a national on-line survey, 70% of staff registered nurses (RNs), reported being bullied and identified senior nurses (24%), charge nurses (17%) nurse managers (14%), nurse colleagues (14%), and physicians (8%) as the perpetrators. Nurses (58%) working five years or less were most likely to be bullied. Two formal organizations receive reports on bullying: human resources (23%) and union or professional organizations (12%), in addition, non-formal channels (65%) were used to address bullying in the workplace.
