Introduction
Understanding one’s own strengths can be challenging but useful. Being self-aware can be especially beneficial in certain careers such as nursing. Being self-aware of one’s own strengths in the nursing field is extremely important for the nurse, their patient, and their peers. Some people may even suggest that understanding one’s own strengths is necessary to develop a meaningful nurse-patient relationship (Rasheed et al., 2018). According to Buckingham and Clifton (2020), having woo being one of my strengths means that I love people. “Woo” stands for “winning others over”. This means that I love meeting new people, talking to new people, initiating conversations with strangers, and making friends. Having a futuristic strength means that the future excites me (Buckingham & Clifton, 2020). It means that I look forward to and enjoy thinking and talking about the future. Possessing a developer strength means that I see the good in every person (Buckingham & Clifton, 2020) . I like to think that people are constantly developing and has the potential for growth. Having a strength of positivity means that I have a positive outlook on life and generally find the good in each situation (Buckingham & Clifton, 2020). Someone who has a strength of positivity can be described as lighthearted and enthusiastic. Having a strength of communication means that I enjoy communicating ideas in creative and memorable ways (Buckingham & Clifton, 2020). It gives me an insight on what and how I can contribute to the team of nurses I am working with and what I need to work on. When working in a team setting, it is important to know how and when to contribute and when it is best to seek out help from others. Having a team of nurses that are aware of their strengths can help to strengthen a unit, improve patient outcomes, and work more cohesively. Knowing what strengths I possess and getting confirmation that these are areas I excel in will help me to use these strengths to their full potential. For example, I always liked to think that I was a good communicator, but getting confirmation that this assumption was accurate has helped me to feel more confident putting this strength into practice.
