Although some taxpayers may think that providing summer meals for students wastes needed money that the school could use for other important issues, other people are very grateful for the meals provided over the summer and other breaks. Schools should provide summer meals for students whose parents can’t afford food for their children. If schools provided summer meals for students, then kids whose parents aren’t home can receive healthy foods instead of just junk food. When students eat healthy foods it doesn’t just keep them healthy, but it also helps them learn (Carsen). If a student doesn’t get the necessary nutrition to keep them healthy, then they can fall behind academically (Carsen). Also, less students would be obese because they would be eating the healthier foods offered by the school. Many families don’t have enough money to provide their children with the needed food to keep them healthy. Around 16 million children are part of a food insecure family (Weinstein). Millions of kids depend on school for food, and without the school meals over the summer many children can starve. Meals from the school could also help fix these problems as well. Although many people think that providing meals for students would be a waste of money, it actually is being put to great use. First, it would help students be healthy. Health is a very important part of a child’s life, and being healthy will help their brains mature and perform better in school.
