“The idea that some lives matter less is the root of all that is wrong with the world.” These words spoken by Paul Farmer are the tragic reality for so many animals sentenced to a life behind bars. Behind the concrete walls and glass enclosures of every zoo rests an agitated spirit. Despite the soothing sounds and smiling faces, this fabricated sanctuary is foreign ground to animals of all sizes. The endless taunting and camera flashes are anything but calming to these defenseless prisoners, and something as free and unrestrained as wildlife should never be enclosed for our enjoyment. Humans need to stop being captivated by captivity; there is no beauty in stolen freedom. Zoos across the planet should be banned as animals are being forcefully taken from their natural habitats, sufficient space can not be provided, and many facilities discourage natural behavior resulting in potential harm to the animals involved. …show more content…

Studies have shown that around 79% of aquarium animals were forcefully taken from their natural habitats (Geer). This is partially because many facilities target babies, which boosts their revenue. However, once the animals mature and people lose interest, these creatures are shipped from place to place without consideration of health and relationships (“Animal Rights”). Also, due to the constant snatching of species, zoos throughout the nation are experiencing an overflow of certain animals. The future of these “leftovers” is grim with the most common option being to kill them. One study held by Captive Animals’ Protection Society revealed that at any given time in zoos across Europe, 7,500 to 200,000 animals were surplus (Geer).
