For many years schools across the country have let their students play in a variety of sports, and many districts want to change that. In Texas there is a public school called Premont Independent. They had financial problems by spending too much cash on sports, buses, the grass field, and bands instead spending money on science labs and music rooms. Therefore to prevent financial problems school districts should, not spend money on sports events, focus on grades more than sports, and bring back science labs.
The many reasons why some schools are low on money is because of sports events. According to Amanda Ripley’s article she says,”Maintaining a grass field can cost up to 20,000 dollars a year”. It’s not only just keeping a field green, the other reason why schools are low on cash is when teacher-coaches go away for a game, the district has to hire a substitute and buses. On Fall of the year 2012 on the first semester more than 50 percent of students passed their classes.This also shows that without sports America cannot lag behind other countries academic wise. So without these sports distracting students, their grades could rise dramatically.
Although focusing on school student’s education is an important topic, maintaining a good environment in a class can be vital as well. Amanda Ripley says that the high school had to close off all of the science labs because they were covered in mold. According to Ripley’s article it states that the middle school had to move to the high school.
