Alcohol companies spend close to $2 billion every year advertising in the United States alone. From 2001 to 2007, they aired more than 2 million television ads and published more than 20,000 magazine advertisements (Jernigan). This shows that there is plenty of advertising for alcohol, and that means more opportunities to reach the preferred audience. However, this also means that the ads also reach younger people that are below the legal drinking age. This in turn influences underage drinking which can lead to dangers such as drunk driving, alcohol poisoning, and aggressive behavior. Alcohol companies should not be advertising so much so that the underage population is not exposed to something that is not meant for them.
Alcohol companies should cut down on advertising because it influences young people to drink alcohol which is dangerous and illegal. Not only is the over-consumption of alcohol a problem with adults, it is a problem with people under the age of 21 as well. In a 2004 study by the University of Southern California, they found that for 7th graders just one standard deviation increase of watching alcohol television advertisements showed a statistical increase of alcohol use in the next year. Specifically beer use of 44%, 34% use of wine or other liquor, and use of 3-drink episodes at 26% (Stacy). This is a direct correlation to alcohol advertisements and alcohol consumption. Alcohol advertising studies has shown that the commercial advertising of alcohol prompts young people to drink. This is a big deal because it proves how influential commercials can be.
