Education has evolved over the years with the changing aspects of social and political life as well as the changing standards of academics, or so one would think. However, with all the new technology and social changes that have arisen in the past 15 years, American schools have failed to keep up with student engagement and the importance of academic rigor for all aspects of education. A survey of 22 thousand Chicagoland high school students asked how they felt in school and the top responses were “tired, stressed, and bored,” for students. These feelings of boredom may seem harmless in the present moment because the students have the opportunity to take more challenging courses the next year. Even with all of the fancy gadgets and tools that are manufactured to help out in the classroom by the companies of America, they don’t seem to actually aid in teaching the kids. America spends more money per pupil than almost any other country yet the schools are still only turning out mediocrely educated kids. The disappointingly average test scores of the United States could lead to a fall in the economy due to a workforce with fewer skills in critical thinking due to not being taught to think for themselves at a younger age. Therefore, it can be noted that American teens are being held back academically, not only because of lack of parental influencing students’ learning but, more importantly, because the teachers are inadequately trained to push the kids into a more rigorous academic routine. Therefore, teacher training standards should be made more rigorous in all colleges of education to increase the discipline and prestige of teachers, and parents should be encouraged to push for increased critical thinking and importance of educational
