Do unto others as you would like them to do to you. Would you want to be treated like a piece of medical equipment when in reality you are a living, breathing creature? Every year 100 million animals are killed in US laboratories because of testing (“Using”). They are held in horrible conditions and are tortured both physically and mentally. Animals cannot speak for themselves so humans need to speak up for them. The government needs to ban testing on all animals because there are alternative methods, the results are not always accurate, and it is inhumane. Currently, the only law that relates to animal experimentation is the Animal Welfare Act. This is not enough. The Animal Welfare Act does not obtain to animals such as birds and mice, which make up the majority of laboratory animals (“Animal”). The act states the minimum standards for laboratory animals when they should be held at a much higher standard. The law is also not very well followed. Harvard Medical School, University of Massachusetts, Princeton University, and many others all violated this law numerous times (“The Animal”). All animal species differ from one another biologically making the results difficult to interpret (“Using”). Results can also be easily manipulated too. News stories often leave out important information to make studies seem better than they really are. The public does not realize just how often experiments fail because no one wants to publish that information. Some universities even embellish their findings to make themselves look better. (“Using”). When this occurs, animals lives are being wasted. Another reason that results are inaccurate is that artificially induced diseases in animals are never identical to diseases that occur in human beings (“Using”).
