There are many things about Auburn High School that I find absolutely unattractive, things that make me want to roll over and go back to bed when my alarm breaks the silence of the dreary morning. From bullying, to seemingly poor spending and fairly loathsome school authorities, our school has multiple issues that I think should be fixed. The biggest lie a teacher can tell is “I do not tolerate bullying.” Sure, they may have good intentions, but more often than not they turn a blind eye to any sort of issue relating to bullying. According to stopbullying.gov, 20% of all U.S. high school students have experienced bullying at some point in their high school career; so that means about 300 of Auburn High School students have been bullied. Sure, new sports equipment would be nice, but that only satisfies the 55% of students who participate in high school sports. What about satisfying all students? In my mind it is very simple: focus on basic necessities. How come we can afford to construct a new track and turf field, but we can not replace broken bathroom stall doors, or implement a heating system that actually works? I also believe that we should put more time and effort into our music and arts programs. While we do offer a lot of programs for the arts and Auburn High School, we do not always have the necessary supplies for it. For example, our musical club often finds itself victim to low funding, and we are forced to constantly recycle old sets and costumes. As the stage manager this is very frustrating, since without needed materials our shows often turn out bland and boring, even if it is not our fault. Additionally, music and art can be a great outlet for stressed students, and I think offering more opportunities to them would be a wonderful idea. It is important to support creatively ambitious students as much as we support athletic ones. Just think about how many times that music programs have almost been cut in the past five years.
