The city council has recently been discussing the adoption of a curfew law for teenagers. Of course, they have neglected to discuss the topic with teenagers themselves and are basing the grounds for the law on their own prejudices. Setting up a nightly curfew law is a terrible idea and should not be considered because it is unreasonably strict, invasive of people's privacy and personal rights, and would prove to be ineffective. What if a child is out with their parents, or if there is an emergency? The desire to have a curfew for teenagers is understandable, however such early times like 10:00 pm and 12:00 am are incredibly unreasonable. Teenagers are likely to be out that late for reasons out of their control, and should not expect to be persecuted for crimes they did not commit. Setting such an early curfew is also a huge invasion of the personal rights and privacy of teenagers themselves. The creation of the curfew law is being clouded by the idea that teenagers are the source of destruction in this city. It is being assumed that if teenagers are out later or, "on the streets", that they are going to commit crimes and cause trouble. This is not true. It is not up to the city council to decide whether or not a teenager's harmless actions are wrong and should be punished. It might be wise for the city council to conduct investigations to see just how many crimes are committed by teens, and at what times during the day. From there it would be easy to determine if such a law it really necessary.
