Within the last decade, there are over 1,600 school districts in the United States using a four-day school week schedule. There are many benefits to a four-day school week model. Switching to a four-day school week can save schools a lot of money and will make the school week much more manageable. Additionally, some believe that a four-day school week will make the school days much longer which can academically benefit students. Overall, schools should transition to a four-day school week. One reason schools should transition to a four-day school week is that schools would save money. Schools have to spend a lot of their money on transportation and meals for the students. With a five-day school week, the school week is very busy and messy. There is little to no time for extracurricular activities outside school and during the day, there is very little time to fit all of the teaching or lesson into one day. With a shorter school week with longer hours, the week would be less stressful for the students and staff and leave them with much more free time out of school. The author suggests, “If we had a four-day week, things like soccer practice and club meetings could be scheduled for our day off instead of after school” (Fields 28). This describes that with an extra day off during a four-day school week, kids can practice extra-curricular activities during the day instead of after school at night or during the afternoon. Because of the long five-day school week, teachers are left with very little time for grading papers. The text states, “According to a study conducted in 2018 by the Office of National Statistics in Great Britain, teachers do 20% of their work (10 hours or more) before school, after school and on weekends” (“The Pros and Cons of the Four-Day School Week”, par. 18). This exemplifies that switching to a four-day school week would offer teachers more time to grade assignments and tests.
