ULTIMATE PURPOSE: Due to the enormous amount of death, injury, emotional and psychological harm caused by gun violence and accidental firearm discharge; the united states needs stricter gun laws. The goal is to mitigate unsafe usage and purchases of weapons, not infringe on gun owners’ rights.

PROPOSITION:
With the abundance of guns in our society, we need a combination of laws, procedures, education and social standards to mitigate further risks and possible causes of future mass shootings.

POSSIBLE ISSUES: 1 - Congress has blocked federal money from being used for basic research on gun violence and its effect on public health.

Countries with restrictive gun control laws have lower gun homicide and suicide rates than the United States.
According to a Mar. 2016 study, gun homicide rates in the United States were 25.3 times higher and gun suicides were 8 times higher in 2010 than in other populous, high-income countries. [3]
More gun control laws would reduce gun deaths.
David Frum, Daily Beast and CNN contributor, stated, "American children under age 15 were nine times more likely to die of a gun accident than children in other advanced wealthy countries… About 200 Americans go to emergency rooms every day with gunshot wounds." [1]
There were 464,033 total gun deaths between 1999 and 2013: 270,237 suicides; 174,773 homicides; and 9,983 unintentional deaths. Guns were the leading cause of death by homicide and by suicide.
Guns are rarely used in self-defense.
Of the 29,618,300 violent crimes committed between 2007 and 2011, 0.79% of victims (235,700) protected themselves with a threat of use or use of a firearm, the least-employed protective behavior.
