The debate on gun control has consequently been subject to debate for as long as we remember, but now, more than ever, the need for gun control is not a topic that has lied in darkness. With school shootings sadly becoming a never ending phenomenon the need for a more strict gun control policy is needed now more than ever. Ever since the shooting in Columbine, CO in 1999, there has been a ripple effect afterwards that has wreaked havoc in the United States. These shootings are called “copycat” shootings because the event in 1999 put the idea of such a terrible occurrence into the minds of the mentally ill. The common reaction, that has plagued our nation, of letting the hot debate of gun control die down after a tragedy needs to stop. Guns should be limited and only used in a situation that deems the necessity of a firearm.

The part of this argument that people do not realize is that the government is solely just trying to remove the right to get an AR-15. People believe that they use these for hunting, which is absurd. Also, people need to take into account that the second amendment was written in a time when firearms were an actual necessity for survival. The fact is, people do not need high calibur, big magazine carrying, military grade weapons to kill a motionless deer. People have the right to have a weapon but need to be more responsible and not so naive with that the excess power of the weapon can do to a person.
