Gun violence is a public health hazard, just like smoking, car accidents, and drunk driving. In the United States, nearly a day goes by without someone becoming a victim of gun violence. Every time a high school shooting rampage occurs, right-leaning media pundits dust off their old-fashioned rhetoric and try to explain away the problem. They don’t even bother to think about who the audience would be for their trite talking points; therefore, they are always the same: guns don’t kill people, a good armed guy vs. a bad armed guy, the Second Amendment, and so on and so forth. It is a problem that we all risk, a problem that we all share, and one that we can all help to solve. Taking action to prevent gun violence might take time, and there are several options available. Some people believe that fighting for policy or political change is the best way to go. That is not, however, our only option; there is always something we can do. Let's say we take five minutes at the dinner table to talk about gun violence prevention with your parents. If you have an hour, share your social media conversation with your friends. If you just have one day, you could try to raise money for victims of gun violence or their families through charities or crowdfunding.
